The Set Up

It's true, cars are a revolutionary invention, but they don't come without their side effects, especially to our environment. Even electric cars can be a burden when you consider the resources needed to obtain and charge the batteries. So let's bring back another revolutionary invention that goes back millions of years — bipedalism, or also known as walking.

Pledge Summary

  • WHAT —  Make the decision to walk or bike instead of drive
  • WHEN   As often as feasible... or at least once a week
  • WHY — Exercise is good. Greenhouse gases are bad.

Three Reasons to Sign Up

A little exercise for you and lot of lovin' for the planet.

1

Plain and simple, exercise is good for everyone, and that includes walking! But 10,000 steps a day can be a lot for many. Luckily, one study found that just walking 4,400 steps per day (or about 2 miles) reduces the risk of death by 41%.

2

On average, it only takes 4 - 6 minutes to bike a mile. So think about all the places that are within two to three miles of you. In only 10 to 15 minutes you could be right where you need to be by only using a bike.

3

Cars on average release over 400 grams of CO2 for every mile driven. Although this is a relatively small amount, it's important to remember that emissions add up and can have a significant impact on the climate.

Final Thoughts

So let's mash two potatoes with one fork! Cut out driving when you can by getting your body in motion. Need to grab a couple of groceries? Dust off the bike. Want to take the kids to a park? Put your walkin' shoes on. Need to get a car wash? Well, you probably should still use your car for that one.
